Q BAR GOES UP TO 11

Dance Thailand December 14, 2010

According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia -”Up to eleven” or “these go to eleven” is an idiom from popular culture which has come to refer to anything being exploited to its utmost abilities, or apparently exceeding them, such as a sound volume control. Similarly, the expression “turning it up to eleven” may refer to the act of taking something to an extreme. In 2002 the phrase entered the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary with the definition “up to maximum volume.”

The phrase was coined in a scene from the 1984 mockumentary/rockumentary This Is Spinal Tap by the character Nigel Tufnel, played by Christopher Guest. In this scene Nigel gives the rockumentary’s director, Marty DiBergi, played by Rob Reiner, a tour of his stage equipment. While Nigel is showing Marty his Marshall guitar amplifiers, he points out one in particular whose control knobs all have the highest setting of eleven (unlike standard amplifiers, whose volume settings are typically numbered from zero to ten), believing that this numbering actually increases the volume of the amp (“It’s one louder”). When Marty asks why the ten setting is not simply set to be louder, Nigel pauses, clearly confused, before responding, “These go to eleven”

Q Bar Bangkok last year reached a landmark that few nightclubs or bars around the world ever accomplish. 10 years is a benchmark that is special and now we ask. Where do we go from here?
“UP TO 11 of course!”

It’s amazing how much Bangkok has changed over the past decade, the internet was (and many will say still is) super slow but remember dialing in for a connection and 56k was blazingly fast? Social Networking was considered a night in Q Bar and not something you do online, nightclubs in Bangkok never closed, the Baht was at its weakest, DJ’s still used vinyl records or had to buy cds because “burning” was something associated with cooking or a fire, TV’s were not flat and people watched TV to get away from reality not watch reality TV, Cell Phones were big and only made phone calls or sent text messages to other phones. You had to ask for directions instead of turning on your GPS. You had to take your photos out to be developed. Going “Green” was something you did after a night of too much drinking at Q Bar. There were 2-3 hotels on Soi 11 a handful of bars and food carts and a lot of grass and trees…oh how times have changed

After 10 legendary years, Q Bar has established itself as a true ‘institution’ in Bangkok, an iconic bar that brought something fresh to a city that thought it had seen everything. Q Bar is still, after over a decade, the watchword for international visitors and Bangkokians alike and the benchmark to which many others have – and still do – aspire.

Looking back over nearly 11 thrilling and challenging years, owners David Jacobson and Andrew Clark will feel that they have gone a long way to realizing one of their principal goals at the inception of Q Bar: to create a truly international-class venue in Bangkok. Q Bar has been called by some, one of the world’s best bars and nightclubs

Q Bar is not simply ‘world famous in Bangkok’. It has been featured on hundreds of television networks worldwide, in newspapers and magazines from Dubai to Washington, Tokyo to Malta, Beijing to Brisbane, Moscow and New York, featured in Elle, Vogue, Time, Esquire, Newsweek, the London Bar guide and more respected publications around the world than we can name here. It has hosted the likes of Mick Jagger, Matt Dillon, Owen Wilson, William Hurt, No Doubt, Oliver Stone, Eric Cantona, Michelle Yeoh, Steven Segal, Collin Farrell, Jackie Chan, Rick Yune, Michael Rappaport, Jay Sean, the Black Eyed Peas, the G-Unit, the Backstreet Boys, Paradon Srichipan, a multitude of Miss Worlds and Miss Universes and several Princes and Princesses have lounged about while soaking up the resident DJ’s mix of chill-out and club tunes.

In addition to Q Bar’s high quality international resident DJ’s, over the past 11 years Q Bar has brought to Bangkok some of the best talent in the world and brought them to Bangkok first names such as: Kid Koala, DJ Cash Money, Ice-T, Jazzy Jeff, Z-Trip, A-Trak, Q Bert, The Mad Professor, Maseo of De La Soul, DJ Premier and of course the legendary Hedkandi Parties and supported the local music scene with events like Jub Chai Parties, our famous 9 Mile MC contests, Bollywood Parties, Events with Bakery Music, Grammy, Sony, MTV, Channel V and more. Oh so many parties over the years it’s hard to even recall them all!

Now comes the time for us to “Turn it up to 11!” Some may think Q Bar has already been “exploited to its utmost abilities, or apparently exceeding them” but its time for us to take things to a new extreme and start a new decade making it louder than we possibly could over the last 10 years. The time has come to turn it up a notch and take it to 11! Why should anything stop at 10?! Look for the launch of our expanded smoking section, new Grey Goose Vodka Bar, New Phone Applications and more surprises on December 17 as we celebrate our very special 11th Anniversary and we hope to see you all there!
